This position is responsible for coding and abstracting administrative, clinical, demographic and encounter data from the patient's permanent health record for discharged patients within Alberta Health Services (AHS), Calgary and Area hospitals and urgent care sites.
The types of patient visits coded and abstracted include all registered inpatient, emergency department, day surgery/medicine, urgent care and ambulatory clinic visits. Coding specialists must give full attention to detail, recognize the importance of validity, integrity and reliability of coded data while maintaining a high standard of quality and speed in order to meet the 21-day turn-around times and submission deadlines.
The Health Information Management professional may also be responsible for the management of patient records, which includes custody and control, chart assembly and analysis, chart retrieval, and filing. This position performs access and disclosure of patient information according to the Health Information Act and other related legislation.
This position reports to the rural Site Coordinator, Health Information/Records Management who determines the assignment of coding duties to respective staff, taking into account work flow efficiencies, operational needs and experience levels of staff. Coding specialists work with physicians and other allied health professionals to validate and improve chart documentation. The coding specialist provides consistent, accurate and timely data that is used for utilization and strategic planning initiatives by various levels of administration and types of caregivers.
Each staff member has a "home" site in which they will be based; however, with the HSAA common certificate in place, and as workloads across individual sites dictates, staff may be required to work at other sites.
The Coding specialists shall maintain confidentiality of all AHS, Calgary and Area information in accordance with the Health Information Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and other privacy legislation in effect and shall comply at all times with the AHS, Calgary and Area's Information Privacy and Information Security policies.
Graduate of an approved school for Health Information Management professionals, required. Certification by the Canadian College of Health Information Management, required within one year from the date of hire. Member in good standing with the Canadian Health Information Management Association, required. Must possess a sound knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, and disease processes. Knowledge of related legislation regarding privacy of patient health information, required. Excellent English language skills in reading, writing and oral communications, required. Membership in the Health Information Management Association of Alberta, preferred. Minimum of 6 months coding and abstracting experience with ICD-10-CA/CCI coding and familiarity with CIHI Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and Alberta Ambulatory Data Collection Standards, desired. Ability to work with personal computers (Windows, MS Office) and keyboarding skills, required. Demonstrated ability to maintain accuracy of information, required. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workloads to meet established deadlines, essential. Must be a team player and get along well with others. Ability to work with various types of office equipment such as fax machine, photocopier and printer, required. Experience with terminal digit filing, preferred. Must have a valid Alberta driver's license.
