An exciting opportunity exists in AHS, Calgary Zone. The South Health Campus (SHC) is open with new areas continuing to open until late 2013. The SHC will be a full service hospital that will provide new services to Calgary in high need areas including Women’s Health, NICU, Emergency, Surgery and Mental Health.

The SHC is more than just a “hospital”. It is a campus environment and will include inpatient, outpatient, and wellness services, as well as prevention and public health learning opportunities for the community. The campus will also include a YMCA and retail services.

The SHC has four key pillars of service: Collaborative Practice, Wellness, Patient and Family Centred Care, and Innovation. These pillars are guiding the development and delivery of service to all patients and families at SHC.

The Medication Management Clinical Nurse Educators (CNE) will be responsible for planning and implementing a variety of educational programs necessary to ensure that Innovative Medication Management is operationalized at South Health Campus (SHC). The CNE will develop and provides educational support and programs for all staff involved in medication management at SHC.

A key component of this work is the implementation of innovative medication management processes and programs designed to improve patient care while minimizing risks. The projects included in this program are:
  • Implementation of smart IV pumps and associated medication administration monitoring software;
  • Implementation of automated dispensing cabinets (ADC);
  • Implementation of new medication management processes, and guidelines;
  • Implementation of medication reconciliation processes; and
  • Design, implementation, and commissioning of secure medication rooms.

    The CNE is expected to work collaboratively with health professionals involved in medication management at SHC and the Calgary Zone. The CNE will be part of the SHC Medication Management Project and will work closely with Project Managers to ensure the project outcomes are delivered.

    Initially, the focus will require innovative approaches to ensure all SHC staff have obtained the necessary knowledge and skill to support medication management. Teaching all SHC staff in collaboration with other CNE's in the zone will be key. Support of preceptors for all orientation required for pre-opening will need to be developed and implemented.
  • Baccalaureate in Nursing or equivalent health related degree required;
  • Current registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta required;
  • Masters Degree in Nursing or equivalent health related degree would be an asset;
  • Experience in Medication Management would be considered an asset;
  • Experience in educational program design, delivery and measurement of learning outcomes preferred;

    Demonstrated expertise in:
  • Application of adult teaching – learning principles;
  • Application of Best Practice Principles related to Medication Management;
  • Communication and collaboration skills with other health professionals;
  • Leadership skills;
  • Ability to promote the change process;
  • Application and promotion of problem solving and creative thinking;
  • Ability to critique development of staff and provide meaningful feedback;
  • Prioritizing and meeting competing demands/requirements of setting; and
  • Computer skills in MS Office Suite, word processing, email, internet access.
