The critical care nurse is a leader and pivotal member of the inter-professional team. Striving to achieve the best patient outcomes through a team-based approach, critical care nurses work collaboratively with physicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, pharmacists and social workers.
The ICU RN acts as a primary caregiver to the patient and family in the critical care setting, and is trained in advanced critical care certifications including Code Blue and Outreach (Rapid Response, MET) Team membership. Calgary offers an extensive orientation program for both novice and senior critical care nurses.
One of the largest and busiest critical care units in Alberta, Foothills Medical Center ICU is the regional tertiary referral center supporting multiple clinical programs including trauma, burns, and neurocritical care for Southern Alberta. This 30 bed unit is located in a state of the art facility, and offers a broad case mix including medical and surgical emergencies, oncology and hematology.
Key Responsibilities include: Provision of direct care for patients & families Maintenance of electronic and written documentation of care Maintain professional practice including but not limited to mentoring of unit staff, ongoing professional development, assumption of charge nurse duties when needed, promotion of a positive supportive work environment, and demonstration of professional accountability Promotion of a healthy, respectful and safe practice environment
Required Education: Graduate of a recognized School of Nursing Eligible for or current CARNA registration Current BCLS-HCP certification
Additional Education: Certificate in Adult Critical Care Nursing an asset ACLS Certification preferred Degree in Nursing preferred
Recent ICU experience preferred, with: Strong physical assessment skills Experience in care of ventilated patients Hemodynamic monitoring, i.e. CVCs, arterial lines Administration of vasoactive medications Recent acute care nursing experience will be considered Must possess strong decision-making skills and be able to work effectively in stressful and emergent situations Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with other members of the inter-professional team Experience with patient and family centered care and collaborative practice is a strong asset
