The Critical Care Nurse is a leader and pivotal member of the inter-professional team. Striving to achieve the best patient outcomes through a team-based approach critical care nurses work collaboratively with Physicians, Respiratory Therapists, Physical and Occupational Therapists, Pharmacists and Social Workers.

The ICU RN acts as a primary caregiver to the patient and family in the critical care setting and is trained in advanced critical care certifications including Code Blue and Outreach (Rapid Response, MET) Team membership. Calgary offers an extensive orientation program for both novice and senior Critical Care Nurses.

The Rockyview General Hospital is unique in offering a combined 10 bed Intensive Care Unit and 7 bed Coronary Care Unit. With a primary focus on critically ill medical and surgical patients who require a high degree of specialized nursing and medical care, common patient diagnoses include respiratory failure, pneumonia, complications related to asthma, cardiac arrest, sepsis, renal and liver failure, complications of diabetes (DKA), complications of pregnancy, shock, chest pain, MI, CHF and dysrhythmias.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Provision of direct care for patients & families
  • Maintenance of electronic and written documentation of care
  • Maintain professional practice including but not limited to mentoring of unit staff, ongoing professional development, assumption of charge nurse duties when needed, promotion of a positive supportive work environment, and demonstration of professional accountability
  • Promotion of a healthy, respectful and safe practice environment
  • Graduate of a recognized School of Nursing
  • Eligible for or current CARNA registration
  • Current BCLS-HCP certification through Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada

    Additional Education:
  • Certificate in Adult Critical Care Nursing an asset
  • ACLS Certification preferred
  • Degree in Nursing preferred

  • Recent ICU experience preferred, with:
  • Strong physical assessment skills
  • Experience in care of ventilated patients
  • Hemodynamic monitoring, i.e. CVCs, arterial lines
  • Administration of vasoactive medications
  • Recent acute care nursing experience will be considered
  • Must possess strong decision-making skills and be able to work effectively in stressful and emergent situations
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with other members of the inter-professional team
  • Experience with patient and family centered care and collaborative practice is a strong asset
