An exciting opportunity exists in AHS, Calgary Zone. The South Health Campus (SHC) is expected to open in Summer 2012 with new areas continuing to open until late 2013. The SHC will be a full service hospital that will provide new service to Calgary in high need areas including Women's Health, NICU, Emergency, Surgery and Mental Health.

The SHC is more than just a "hospital". It is a campus environment and will include inpatient, outpatient, and wellness services, as well as prevention and public health learning opportunities for the community. The campus will also include a YMCA and retail services.

The SHC has four key pillars of service: Collaborative Practice, Wellness, Patient and Family Centered Care, and Innovation. These pillars are guiding the development and delivery of service to all patients and families at SHC.

This position is responsible for: organizing, and assisting in directing the day to day operations of the Pulmonary Diagnostics Unit and Bronchoscopy Suite at the South Health Campus to ensure that the service provided is effective, efficient, and of the highest standard. The Respiratory Therapist II acts as a Respiratory clinical resource for allied health care staff and is responsible for the daily coordination of patient care activities on the Pulmonary Diagnostics Unit, as well as perform pulmonary diagnostic assessments and tests on patients presenting to the Unit.

The Respiratory Therapist II is a patient advocate and provides a link between the patients, families and care/service providers. This position will share equally in any of the daytime shift or week day responsibilities that may be expected.
  • Equipment evaluation, assisting with Accreditation of the Pulmonary Diagnostics Unit and Bronchoscopy Suite.
  • Acts as a clinical resource for all Staff and RT students within the; Pulmonary Diagnostics Unit, Bronchoscopy Suite and Respiratory Clinics.
  • Provides coordination, leadership, mentorship, provision and enhancement of pulmonary diagnostics services to optimize diagnostic and therapeutic services to cardiopulmonary patients.
  • Promotes quality respiratory therapy.
  • Promotes critical thinking and problem solving within the interdisciplinary team.
  • Monitors and evaluates ongoing care provision to ensure safe and effective practice.
  • Assists other respiratory staff to utilize and incorporate the allied health team in care and practice.
  • Is able to identify when issues occur with Pulmonary Diagnostic and Bronchoscopy equipment occur.
  • Provides information and support to patients and families in collaboration with the: respiratory, physician, allied health care and nursing team.
  • Ensures/monitors adherence with Alberta Health Services Policies and Practice Guidelines.
  • Works within the full scope of practice that is outlined by the General Register of the College and Association of Respiratory Therapist of Alberta (CARTA).
  • Supports, fosters and implements evidence based practice.
  • Demonstrates ability to use equipment and advanced technology according to established standards and procedures.
  • Able to identify equipment related issues/malfunctions within the Pulmonary Diagnostic Unit and Bronchoscopy Suite area and familiar with the protocals and procedures to have equipment repaired and/or replaced.
  • Familiar with the calibration of Pulmonary Diagnostics equipment and long standing experience in utilizing Pulmonary Diagnostics Unit and Bronchoscopy Suite equipment and scopes.
  • Familiar with all Pulmonary Diagnostic Tests and Procedures conducted within a Pulmonary Diagnostics Unit and Bronchoscopy Suite.
  • Identifies trends in safety issues, reports appropriately, and participates in correction and prevention action plans/quality improvement activities.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy.
  • Minimum 0-5 years of clinical respiratory therapy experience. Minimum 2-3 years preferred recently working in a Pulmonary Diagnostics Unit and within a Bronchoscopy Suite.
  • Current practice permit with the General Register of the College and Association of Respiratory Therapist of Alberta (CARTA)
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.
