The Health Promotion Coordinators act as an interdisciplinary team of facilitators across the province to promote positive social and physical environments to support healthy children and youth in Alberta.  These positions serve as a strategic liaison between Alberta Health Services (AHS) – Healthy Living, Alberta Health, and other key partners and initiatives to facilitate health promotion strategies.  Current focus is on partnering with school jurisdictions and school communities.  Future work may focus on broadening this approach to create healthier childcare settings.   

This facilitator position will be responsible for engaging and collaborating with key stakeholders to develop, implement and evaluate current and future initiatives consistent with provincial directives. Specifically, this position will use a settings approach and work at the systems level to:

Mobilize and activate communities of interest to support healthy living.
Support, promote and advocate for the development and implementation of policies that support healthy living.
Facilitate and support healthy environments for children and youth where they live, learn and play.
Promote the importance and benefits of healthy eating, active living and positive mental well being in children and youth through education and awareness.
Evaluate the status and progress of local strategies and assist with evaluation of provincial strategies.
Formal Education

Baccalaureate degree in health or related field required.
Masters degree in health related discipline preferred.
Special consideration will be given to person with a concentration in health promotion, particularly as related to children and youth.

Experience

Minimum 2 - 3 years experience in health promotion or related field with substantial experience working with complex networks and partnerships.
Demonstrated experience with project/program management and program planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Knowledge and expertise in health promotion.
Knowledge of and experience with comprehensive school health / health promoting schools is an asset.
Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities.
Demonstrated knowledge and application of the population health promotion model, relevant health promotion strategies and determinants of health.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (written, verbal and interpersonal).
Demonstrated ability in report and grant writing.
Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a variety of disciplines, sectors, and internal and external stakeholders/partners.
Demonstrated ability to facilitate and mobilize diverse groups and build consensus.
Demonstrated ability to develop and apply creative approaches to program planning and development.
Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
Knowledge of various research methods and ability to interpret data.
Ability to be resourceful, creative, adaptive, and flexible.
Ability to communicate (written and oral) in French is considered an asset.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Excel, Word, Power Point, etc.).

Physical Effort / Strength Required

Occasional physical demands include lifting, pulling and pushing, sitting, walking, standing, transferring and transporting educational materials and supplies.
