The Registered Nurse promotes the achievement of an acceptable level of self care for clients by providing assistance in the management of treatment side effects, symptom control, emotional support, education, rehabilitation, cancer prevention and early detection. The nurse works closely with all members of the health care team to provide safe, comprehensive and individualized care, where appropriate, the Registered Nurse practices within a system of primary nursing.
As a team member, and within a system of primary nursing, the nurse provides assistance to patients and their families in the following areas: support to physician clinics for new and follow-up patients, chemotherapy treatments and supportive treatments / procedures, support to Colposcopy clinics, including assistance with procedures and patient teaching, patient and family teaching in all aspects of cancer and cancer care, emotional support to patients, families, and team members, involvement in clinical trials, activities related to cancer detection and prevention.
Utilizes the framework of the nursing process in the practice of nursing. Ensures nursing observations and actions are current, communicated and recorded. Acts as an advocate for the client as appropriate. Assists physicians and executes medical prescriptions as directed. Participates as a member of the health care team contributing to integrated client care. Facilitates timely referral to community resources / support programs. Follows established procedures to minimize hazards in the workplace. Provides nursing assistance in clinical practice areas within the clinic as the situation requires. Utilizes current developments in nursing science to advance client care. Integrates education support to clients within the framework of the nursing process. Participates in nursing conferences to individualize client care. Contributes to in-service programs relative to her area(s) of expertise. Participates in activities which promote her own professional and personal growth and development. Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of standards relative to nursing care for specific patient populations and/or specific nursing procedures within her area(s) of expertise. Participates in committee work to further the goals and objectives of the Department of Nursing and the Jack Ady Cancer Centre. Within the scope of her area(s) of expertise, contributes to educational programs for practicing nurses and other health care professionals, to structured educational activities for nursing students and to community educational endeavors supported by the clinic. Initiates, participates in and / or utilizes current nursing research applicable to oncology nursing practice. Participates in interdisciplinary research within the clinic.
Graduate of a recognized school of nursing, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing preferred Must demonstrate a keen interest in all aspects of Oncology nursing Must demonstrate good communication, organization, and interpersonal skills Must demonstrate an ability to work effectively with a multi-disciplinary team and an ability to work independently Must have current CARNA membership and BCLS-HCP certification Computer literacy and keyboarding skills
