Minimum: 21.16 per hour Maximum: 26.38 per hour
Clerical Duties: (25%)
  • Works with laboratory information system (LIS)
  • Maintaining electronic patient files
  • Printing various information lists as required
  • Scanning paper documents
  • Collects reports for mailing and distribution to physicians, clinics and other hospitals.
  • Provides work leadership to new laboratory clerks and Laboratory assistances including training, mentoring, monitoring and assisting with problems and inquires
  • Provides collection labels for all sample collections
  • Receives and labels specimens being submitted to the laboratory

    Reception: (30%)
  • Receives patients into the laboratory in a pleasant, respectful and courteous manner. Maintains orderly flow of patients through the respective areas of the department
  • Reviews tests request and associated documentation for accuracy and completeness
  • Enters patient information into the LIS
  • Provide patient instructions on proper preparation required prior to examinations or procedures
  • Answers telephones: provides general information, answers departmental inquires, returns or redirects calls; and makes appointments
  • Monitors patients in waiting area, handles requests or problems as necessary

    Technical: (30%)
  • Collects and handles samples as specified by collection and handling procedures
  • Handles biological specimens in a safe manner
  • Performs ECG and Holter monitors as maybe necessary
  • Performs procedures according to established protocols

    Quality Assurance: (10%)
  • Verifies that control results are within acceptable ranges
  • Maintains laboratory equipment
  • Reports unusual or unexpected occurrences

    Other: (5%)
  • Notifies appropriate staff when supply levels are low, reports equipment breakdown or failure
  • Prioritizes duties and workflow to ensure all duties are completed in a timely manner
  • Keeps work areas organized and clean
  • Performs related duties as requested
  • Formal Education
  • Certificate of Laboratory Assistant from the Southern Alberta Institute Technology (SAIT) / Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology an asset.
  • Must be familiar with working with computer applications including Office, e-mail, Internet and willing to learn additional software applications such as Laboratory Information Systems as required.

  • Experience working with the public would be an asset.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Any Canadian equivalency to English 30 or 33 or CLBA (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment) score of Benchmark 8 completed within the last six months.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with patients / clients, families, staff, interdisciplinary team members and personnel from other departments in a fast pace changing environment.
  • Demonstrates a customer service attitude and delivers excellent customer service by effectively meeting customer (internal and external) client needs by means of building productive customer relations and taking responsibility for customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to work independently when necessary.
  • Demonstrates personal leadership, regardless of role, by leading themselves through change, building positive and collaborative working relationships.
  • Facilitates change positively by encouraging others and accepting change within the workplace.
  • Recent training or experience related to clinical laboratory service required.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to work under close public scrutiny.
  • Demonstrated computer skills.
  • Must be prepared to maintain competency of technical skills.
