The purpose of the position is to provide vision, leadership and direction to selected hospital units/programs. The Unit Manager coordinates clinical, educational, research and administrative activities for the unit to ensure safe, effective, efficient, accessible and appropriate care is available to clients and their families within DTHR. The CM provides clinical guidance and development of staff. This position is aware of patient safety as it relates to the roles and responsibilities of the job.

Specific Accountabilities
Leadership: The CM provides vision and directs clinical supervision & management of specified nursing units/programs. Is responsible for building positive customer relations with patients, families, staff, physicians, all departments within the hospital, region and community.

Human Resource Management: Interviews, hires and manages performance of staff who report to this position: RNS, LPNs, Unit Secretaries, and Unit Assistants. Addresses disciplinary concerns and utilizes appropriate processes fro progressive discipline. Conducts regular reviews of employee performance. Manages staff attendance, overtime as well as replacements for approved absences and leaves. Acts as a facilitator/liaison for student placements. The CM ensures adequate staffing coverage, return to
work accommodation, WCB, accident/injury investigation etc.

Continuous Quality Improvement/management: Develops response to quality outcome indicators by developing and implementing strategies to improve performance/outcome. Implements change and is a change agent on the unit, creating an environment that is conducive to the change. In addition the CM develops unit operational plans to support the dept and strategic directions, implements strategies to address these plans and evaluates the effectiveness of the strategies, develops implements and evaluates specific unit standards of care, and responds to patient and family complaints.

Effective Decision Making: Is accountable for decisions which effect the day to day operations of the unit. Participates in many multi-departmental decision making activities that effect the unit, the program, the facility and the region. The CM is responsible for the unit 24 hours a day. Is responsible to provide management direction, in unusual or complicated circumstances, to site/unit staff during non business hours. He/she works with autonomy and there is not always a precedent or policy/procedure to refer to.

Safety: Ensures that safety programs and practices are in place on the unit to prevent staff and patient injury. The CM ensures that staff are aware of policies and procedures such as the Disaster Plan, evacuation and emergency procedures. Implements and follows guidelines when new infectious diseases occur ie. SARS and disseminates all pertinent information. Investigates harassment and injury claims for staff and patients.

Resource Utilization: Ensures acquisition, availability and utilization of resources to provide safe patient care. Participates in the development and is accountable for of the unit budget, monitors expenditures/utilization and implements strategies to keep budget in line. Responsible for ordering all the non-stock supplies on the unit, and the development of contingency proposals for future
anticipated growth.

Professional Development: Ensures resources to address the educational needs of staff, clients and families are in place. Ensures initial and continued competency of staff through certification programs as appropriate. Ensures continued personal education and development is maintained. Serves as a mentor/facilitator to employees within the manager's area of responsibility. Identifies orientation needs and ensures appropriate orientation of new staff. Identifies staff learning needs and works in collaboration with Education Resources and Nursing Leadership to meet these needs. Encourages and supports ongoing educational opportunities and integration of that knowledge into practice, promoting the advancement of quality.

Salary/Benefits: This position is classified as a M2-2. Minimum $84,750.00 to maximum $127,250.00 annually.
  • Education required to perform this job competently is the equivalent of completion of a university (bachelor) program in a health related discipline.
  • An advanced understanding of complex concepts and procedures in an area of work related to cardiology and inpatient care.
  • The candidate will demonstrate continuous learning within health care field and will have had six to ten years of health care experience.
  • Excellent communication skill and ability to engage a diverse team towards the AHS strategic Direction is required.
